Carbon 2020 - Market Makers and Market Leaders
Workshop 2.4.1 15.00-16.30
According to the World Bank, the value of the global carbon market grew to an estimated $30 billion in 2006, three times greater than the previous year. This growth continues to be dominated by trade in the European Union's Emissions Trading Scheme. However, the markets are witnessing continuing expansion with the introduction of new emissions schemes around the globe, as well as strong growth in the project-based mechanisms, namely the Clean Development Mechanism, and the voluntary market for reductions by corporations and individuals. This session will address the following questions:
- What will the global carbon market look like in 2020? In what areas is it likely to expand and who will be its main players?
- Where are emissions trading schemes likely to develop and will an international scheme come to fruition? Will such schemes lead to real and tangible reductions?
- What is the future outlook for the project-based mechanisms and will we see greater private sector participation?
- What are the prospects for the voluntary carbon markets?
