2007 Global Roundtable

UNEP FI 2007 Global Roundtable

Best in Class: Environmental and Social Credit Risk

Workshop 2.2.2
10.40-12.10

This session aims to highlight the current emerging trends for environmental and social risk management (ESRM) in the financial sector and will focus on many of the difficulties and gaps that exist. Contrary to the perception that the sustainable finance industry often creates, environmental and social risk management today might only be applied by institutions of a certain size, specific industries or within a few countries. This session will be interactive with a lively discussion between panel and audience and aims to establish the real picture of where the global financial services sector stands on environmental and social credit risk management. The discussion will focus around the following points:

  • How mainstream is environmental and social risk management in financial institutions today?
  • Should regulation become involved in turning around so far "non-sustainable" banks?
  • Is ESRM more challenging in emerging markets than in Western countries?
  • Is the opportunity side of sustainable finance being forgotten with all the focus on risk management?
  • Is the social side being dealt with as much as the environmental side?
