UNEP FI 2007 Global Roundtable
Unlocking Value in Private Banking
Workshop 2.2.1 10.40-12.10
The work on the inclusion of Environmental, Social and Governance Issues in Private Banking carried out by UNEP FI and the responsible investment community has, until now, focused on setting-the-scene and awareness-raising activities. In this process, important insights were gained with respect to the overall demand for responsible investment products among High Net Worth Individuals (HNWIs), the resulting strategic opportunity for wealth managers around the globe - both in developed and emerging markets - and the challenge of overcoming internal barriers in embracing that opportunity.
Speakers both from traditional markets (Switzerland) and fastly growing Emerging Economies (Brazil, South East Asia) will now report on their first-mover experiences and explain how they are managing to "move from awareness to action" and unlock value - the value of a global market that by 2010 will be worth USD 45 trillion. Issues to be examined:
- Synergies: how to transfer the knowledge and expertise within asset management departments to the sphere of HNWIs?
- Strategy: how to identify, segregate and adequately service investors who either seek financial performance, social/environmental performance or both?
- Products: Engagement products in the spirit of the PRI or sustainability-themed offers?
- Communication:
Ex-Ante: how to market sustainability? Ex-Post: how to report on "Social and Environmental Return on Investment"?
- Along the Investment-Chain: What are the views and concerns of family offices? What do fund managers think? How to make relationship-managers confident?
