Catching the Wave: Trends in Renewable Energy Financing

The global renewable energy industry set a new record of more than $66 billion in investment in 2006, up 43% from 2005. In the power sector, however, renewables represent only 2% of total installed generating capacity. Yet in 2006, 15% of new capacity additions were renewables, accounting for 18% of capital investment. Either disruptive change is now underway in the energy sector and capital commitments are signalling this change, or the markets are heavily overvalued and headed for a correction.

Are China, India and Brazil poised to become the worlds leading producers of renewable energy?
How can the biofuels sector address sustainability and food security concerns?
Is the focus on carbon funds ignoring the need for financing for project implementation?
What new financial and commercial structures are needed to take large-scale projects forward?
Who's investing in the next generation of renewable technologies, beyond wind, solar, geothermal and biofuels?
