Speaker Biographies

Mr. Nazir Foead, Director, Species Programme, WWF Indonesia

Nazir Foead, by training is a conservation biologist and forester. His professional work for WWF Indonesia as the Director of Species Conservation Program brought him, in the last three years, to deal with forestry (pulp and paper) and plantation (palm oil) companies in Sumatra. He previously focused his work more on biological assessments, protected area management and local community facilitation.

He now led WWF Indonesia to develop the corporate engagement in the conservation activities, targeting both the Indonesia based producing companies and their international buyers (in Europe, US, Japan), and the global financial institutions who are supporting the company's operation in Indonesia. The assignment is to secure decent conservation outputs while improving the corporate's environmental performance and social responsibility. He is also the leading negotiator of WWF Indonesia with the corporate.

Education
MSc. in Conservation Biology from The University of Kent at Canterbury, UK (1996); S1 (equivalent with BSc) in Natural Resources Conservation from the Faculty of Forestry, Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, Indonesia (1992).

Dr. Herbert Diemont, Co-ordinator International Initiatives, Alterra Research Institute, Wageningen University

Herbert Diemont holds a PhD in ecology from Wageningen University in the Netherlands. He has 25 years of experience in tropical agriculture and forestry in SE Asia, West Africa and Europe. A negotiator on forest certification in Malaysia and Indonesia for the Dutch government, he is also a negotiator on privatization for Wageningen University.

At present, Dr. Diemont is involved in the first business initiative on sustainable agricultural commodities (i.e. the Sustainable Palm Oil Initiative), and initiating private-public partnerships such as the Global Peatland Initiative and the Rural European Platform. He is also developing the Biorights financial system, presented during the UNEP FI Global Roundtable in Tokyo.

He is based in AlterraGreen World Research, which is part of Wageningen University & Research center (Wageningen-UR) .

Mr. Bart Jan Krouwel, Managing Director Sustainable Development and Social Innovation, Rabobank

Bart Jan Krouwel (born 1946) worked in the banking world from 1964 till 1986 starting with the AMRO Bank, then the Crediet- en Effectenbank (a subsidiary of ING Bank) and the Triodos Bank. He was the co-founder and first director of this bank (1980 - 1986).

For setting up the Triodos Bank he received the FEM/PA award from Prince Claus in 1981 for socially-renewable entrepreneurship in the Netherlands.

From 1986 to 1993 Bart Jan Krouwel was General Director of various institutions for medical healthcare based on mainstream, anthroposophic and alternative approaches in the Berg and Bosch Medical Centre in Bilthoven, in the centre of the Netherlands.

In the same period Bart Jan Krouwel was also co-founder and Managing Co-Director O.W.M. MEDIOS Ltd., a fully independent health insurance company for alternative and complementary medicines.

From 1993 to 1996 Bart Jan Krouwel worked as Director of several non-profit foundations which co-operated closely with each other in the areas of international environmental care, healthcare, humanitarian aid and peace initiatives. Mr. Gorbatchov, last president of the former Soviet Union, was (honorary) president of two of these foundations.

At this moment Bart Jan Krouwel is Managing Director Sustainability and Social Innovation of Rabobank Nederland. Bart Jan Krouwel joined Rabobank Nederland in August 1996.

Roberto Lopez Chaverri, Executive, Sustainable Development Unit, Corporación Andina de Fomento (CAF)Roberto Lopez Chaverri, Executive, Sustainable Development Unit, Corporación Andina de Fomento (CAF)

Roberto Lopez Chaverri is a originally from Costa Rica, and holds a Licentiate in Industrial Engineering from the University of Costa Rica, and an M. Sc. in Environmental Management and Policy from Lund University, Sweden.

For more than 4 years, he worked as international consultant of the Center for Technology Management of Costa Rica (CEGESTI) in business promotion and environmental projects. Mr. Chaverri later went on to work as the Costa Rican coordinator during two years for the Swiss firm Sustainable Project Management, in its Private Public Partnerships projects in Costa Rica.

He also worked for over 2 years as investment officer in charge of the South America and Caribbean portfolio in The Nature Conservancy's EcoEnterprises Fund. Mr. Chaverri is currently working in the Sustainable Development Unit of the Corporacion Andina de Fomento (CAF) as executive in charge of the BioCAF Program and the Sustainable Development in Industries and Financial Institutions Program.

Thomas Streiff, Head, Swiss Re Group Sustainability ManagementMr. Thomas Streiff, Head, Swiss Re Group Sustainability Management

Thomas Streiff heads Swiss Re's Group Sustainability Management. His responsibilities include the representation of Swiss Re's sustainability commitment, training and technical support of internal and external clients in environmental and societal-ethical issues. Additionally, he handles the coordination of internal and external communication of sustainability issues and the coaching of Swiss Re in the implementation and maintenance of a group wide sustainability management.

Prior to joining Swiss Re in 1997, Mr. Streiff was for two years the technical advisor and program director for a natural resource management project in India for the Swiss Government. Earlier, he worked as risk manager with Swiss Re, where his responsibilities included the development of rating systems and related databases for the use of casualty risk assessment of different industries.

From 1990 -1993 he had an assignment as project advisor of a large development program in Tanzania. He was until recently visiting lecturer at Swiss Federal Institute for Technology (ETH) in Zurich at the Postgraduate Course for Developing Countries.

Mr. Streiff is a 1985 graduate of the ETH with a degree in agricultural engineering. From 1986 - 1990 he was research and training assistant at the Institute of Food Technology (ETH) where he obtained in 1990 a Ph.D. degree in technical science. During this time he was also teacher at a high school and published several scientific articles on food conservation technologies.

Ms. N. Cinnamon Dornsife, Senior Advisor, Financial Markets, Forest TrendsMs. N. Cinnamon Dornsife, Senior Advisor, Financial Markets, Forest Trends

N. Cinnamon Dornsife is currently Senior Advisor, Financial Markets for Forest Trends, a Washington based organization that seeks to maintain and restore forest ecosystems by promoting incentives that diversify trade in the forest sector. Ms. Dornsife is additionally an adjunct professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, teaching a course on the international financial institutions. She also serves on the Bretton Woods Committee and the Board of DevelopmentEx.

In 2000 and 2001, Ms. Dornsife was the US Executive Director and Ambassador to the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Ms. Dornsife served as the U.S. Alternate Executive Director from 1994 until 1999. The U.S. Executive Director's Office represents all U.S. positions on ADB policies, loans, projects, and procedures.

Ms. Dornsife is a senior executive, negotiator and advocate with over twenty years' experience in international banking, economic development and foreign policy. She is an expert in Asia-Pacific affairs. Ms. Dornsife's prior experience also includes service as the Washington Representative for The Asia Foundation. Other positions with The Asia Foundation included Southeast Asia Program Field Director and Assistant Representative in Indonesia. Ms. Dornsife's career in international development has also included work with The World Bank, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S.-Asia Environmental Partnership and the Pathfinder Fund.

Ms. Dornsife received a Masters Degree in International Relations from the Johns Hopkins School of advanced International Studies (SAIS), and a Bachelors Degree in Chemistry and Mathematics from Emory University.
