Klaus Toepfer is widely recognized as having spearheaded environmental policy as Minister of Environment in his home country Germany. He is known internationally for his personal commitment to promote environment and sustainable development, and to fight for the cause of the developing world.

Klaus Toepfer became Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Director-General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) in February 1998.

Since he was appointed Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) by the UN Secretary-General he has restructured the organization under five priority areas (environmental assessment and early warning, development of policy instruments, enhanced coordination with environmental conventions, technology transfer and industry, support to Africa).

Before joining the United Nations, Klaus Toepfer held several posts in the Federal and State Governments of Germany. Before his political career as a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) began, Klaus Toepfer was Full Professor at the University of Hannover.

Klaus Toepfer is the recipient of several honours including the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 2002 he was awarded the Bruno H. Schubert Environment Prize and the German Environment Prize which is held to be the most prestigious such prize in Europe. He holds a doctorate in Philosophy and a degree in Economics.

He is married with three children.

Ms. Yuriko Koike graduated from Cairo University in 1976. She had served as the Secretary General of the Japan-Arab Association, and she had been an anchor of several TV programmes such as Nippon TV's "Sesoukodan" and TV Tokyo's "World Business Satellite". She was elected to the House of Councilors in 1992. Since 1993, she has been continuously elected to the House of Representatives (HOR). She has been appointed to various posts in the Japanese government such as: the Vice-Minister of the Management and Coordination Agency; the Vice-Minister of the Economic Planning Agency; the Chair of the Standing Committee on Science and Technology of HOR; a member of the Committee on Economy, Trade and Industry of HOR; and a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of HOR. Ms. Koike has been the Minister of the Environment since September 2003.

Michael Hoelz was born in 1951, is married and has 2 children. After successfully completing an apprenticeship at Deutsche Bank and thereafter studying Business Management at the University of Mannheim, he joined Badische Kommunale Landesbank Mannheim as Head of the Board of Management's Office. Since 1986 he has been working for Deutsche Bank Group and is currently the Global Head of Public Affairs and Sustainable Development.

He is a board member of several Deutsche Bank organizations including Alfred-Herrhausen-Society for International Dialogue, Deutsche Bank Americas Foundation and Deutsche Bank Africas Foundation. His responsibilities include representing Deutsche Bank in national and international committees, i.e. UNEP - Financial Initiative (chairman) Global Compact of UN (representative of Deutsche Bank, Advisory Council), Global Reporting Initiative (member of board of directors), Bellagio Forum for Sustainable Development (chairman), World Business Council for Sustainable Development and others.

Carlos Joly, Chair, UNEP FI Insurance Industry InitiativeCarlos Joly, Chair, UNEP FI Insurance Industry Initiative

Carlos lectures, writes, and provides advice in the fields of socially responsible investing, business ethics and corporate social responsibility. Until 31 May, 2003 he was Senior Vice President of Storebrand Investments ($20 billion in funds under management) and headed its branches in London, Paris and Stockholm.

He is the founder of Storebrand Principle Funds, which champion environmental and social criteria in portfolio management for competitive returns. Prior to Storebrand, he was founder and Managing Director of Vesta Funds/ Skandia Funds (Norway). In the eighties, Carlos worked at Citibank, as a Vice President in New York, London, and Buenos Aires. He is Chair of the UNEP Insurance Industry Initiative and Co-Chair of the UNEP FI Asset Management Working Group.

Carlos has lectured at Oxford, Cambridge, Yale, Kellogg Business School, Haute Ecole de Commerce, and Universite de Paris-Dauphine. He has Co-Chaired the World Business Council for Sustainable Development's working group on Shareholder Value and the Environment. In 1996 he received the Environmental Leadership Award, awarded by Tomorrow Magazine. He is on the board of several cultural institutions.

Carlos has an A.M. in Philosophy from Harvard University.
