Ms. Tokiko Kato, UNEP Special EnvoyMs. Tokiko Kato started her career as a professional vocalist in 1965 whilst studying at the University of Tokyo. She is the winner of the Japan Record Award in the New Artist Category and twice Best Singing Artist. She has produced many hit songs and continues to hold tens of concerts annually in Japan and all over the world including Carnegie Hall, New York, in 1988 and 1990, France, Russia, and China.

In 2000, Ms. Kato recorded "Tokiko Sky" in Johannesburg and completed a collection of her songs in the 20th century. Her recent singles include "Hanagatami" (Flower Basket) in 2002 and "Anatani" (To You) in 2003. In 2003, her works on Okinawa songs spanning 30 years have been collected into an album. She is also and avid writer, and has published many books including her autobiography and poetical works.

She was appointed the Special Envoy for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in October 2000. As part of this work, she has traveled to many countries including Thailand, Indonesia, Mongolia and Korea, and participated in the WSSD Global Summit in Johannesburg in 2002. This year, she has visited Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan to inspect the critical environmental conditions of the Aral Sea and local environmental education programmes.
