2007 Global Roundtable

UNEP FI 2007 Global Roundtable

Green Event Information

Green Event Sponsor

UNEP FI works closely with financial institutions to develop and promote linkages between the environment, sustainability and financial performance. The Global Roundtable is an opportunity to demonstrate the benefits and opportunities of holding a green event. With EPA Victoria’s assistance, our green event activities aim to balance social and economic considerations while pursuing the ultimate aim of reducing the critical environmental impacts that an event of this scale can have.

‘Awareness to Action’

In accordance with the theme of the 2007 Global Roundtable, UNEP FI aims to reduce the Ecological Footprint of the Conference by up to 10%. The Ecological Footprint of the previous Global Roundtable has not been measured but the method of calculation for this target is indicated in more detail below (Monitoring and Reporting).

UNEP FI aims to reduce our Ecological Footprint through the following proposed reduction activities:

  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), through:
    • Exploring options to avoid energy consumption during the event at Melbourne Park e.g. thermostat adjustment of air conditioning/heating.
    • Switching to renewable energy during the event at Melbourne Park, with renewable energy options to be explored at the Welcome reception and Conference Dinner.
    • Avoiding emissions through reducing kilometres travelled by car and public transport through:
      • Yarra Trams - Melbourne’s local Tram operator - will provide free Metcards for all delegates to use over the two days.
      • Promotion of the Skybus airport transfer service;
      • Provision of hotels within walking distance of the conference venue;
      • Location of Welcome Reception and Conference Dinner, within walking distance of the conference venue and hotels; and
      • Provision of walking map and public transport information in conference pack.
    • Where we cannot avoid or reduce GHG emissions, we will offset all delegate and speaker flights, and, where budget permits all remaining emissions.
  • Reduce ecologically intensive resource consumption through:
    • Reduce resource consumption through the minimisation of conference pack materials, such as satchels and stationary.
    • Print all conference material in Melbourne, so as not to fly in the conference documents from long distances abroad.
    • Print all the conference brochures on recycled paper and use vegetable-based ink and less toxic colours.
    • Upload all the conference presentations on the UNEP FI website after the event instead of handling out conference satchels.
    • For the Conference Dinner, source products locally, where possible.
  • Reduce waste to landfill by providing a Waste Wise event at Melbourne Park with waste management at the Welcome reception and Conference Dinner. A Waste Wise event includes:
    • Avoiding waste and litter where possible;
    • Promoting reusable instead of disposable packaging; and
    • Promoting sustainable waste management systems to event goers.

Please note, the reduction of our Ecological Footprint is an ongoing activity, we will update our website as new or amendments to existing initiatives occur.

About Ecological Footprint

In general, the Ecological Footprint Events Calculator measures the resource consumption of human activities across the whole lifecycle of an event and converts this to the amount of land needed to supply the resources consumed and assimilate the waste generated. The Footprint tool also measures the land required to eliminate carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and the impact of the energy required to provide the water we consume.

Monitoring and Reporting

The percentage reduction will be calculated by estimating the Ecological Footprint of the event, prior to the actions above being undertaken, and then calculating the actual Ecological Footprint achieved from data collected over the course of the event. The ecological Footprint calculator will also provide us with the total GHG emissions over the life of the event.

We will provide a post-conference account on the effectiveness of our green event initiatives, on our website and also within any post-conference materials.

You can assist our Ecological Footprint measurement by completing our travel and accommodation survey available at the event.

If you wish to comment or assist in any way in the reduction of our Ecological Footprint, please email unep.fi@epa.vic.gov.au.
