Technical Workshop
Blue Oil? Water and Finance Aligning MDG7 with Business Opportunity
Wednesday, October 24th, 1100 - 1315 Main Conference Venue
Background and Aim
Target 10 of the UN Millennium Development Goals consists in halving by 2015 the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation: this means that 1.5 billion additional people will have to be provided with water-supply- and 2 billion people with basic-sanitation-facilities relative to 2000 levels.
From a developmental macro-perspective the biggest challenge consists in overcoming a resulting funding gap of USD 10 to USD 25 billion per year.
From the business-type micro-perspective of a financial institution this challenge becomes one of the biggest investment opportunities of the coming decades.
Co-convened by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, the International Private Water Association and the International Federation of Private Water Operator this in-depth Workshop aims at identifying successful interaction between private sector financial intermediaries, capital markets as well as different water utilities that cover the whole spectrum of private-public constellations. This will be done by means of the presentation of international best practice by the relevant institutions, both from the water as well the financial sector.
Success means the provision of water and sanitation in a socially, environmentally and financially sustainable manner.
