Becoming Bankable - Experiences and Challenges in Market-Based Finance in the Water Sector
20 August 2008 | World Water Week Side Event | Stockholm, Sweden
In collaboration with
Concretely, this event will bring together water service providers and project developers with water financiers (from both small-scale water funds, project finance and capital market institutions) to discuss progress in accessing market-based finance for sustainable water solutions. The session will share experiences from different geographies on a range of water transactions engaging private finance; it will present experience from service providers and financiers with regard to roles, developing better market information, reducing transaction costs, lowering barriers, and ultimately leveraging market-based finance for sustainable water solutions. The event seeks to increase knowledge of regulatory reforms, business models, financial instruments, and will identify the challenges in facilitating the expansion of such efforts – both among those who need to source sustainable financing as well as those keen to finance sustainable water operations.
The session is jointly hosted by WSP, wich brings field experience of the water sector gaining access to commercial finance, and UNEP Finance Initiative, which - trough its Water & Finance Workstream - has initiated a dialogue among commercial financiers and capital market actors to discuss the strategic opportunities in the water sector as well as the approaches and means by which to align financial with water sustainability.
