UNEP FI African Task Force (ATF) are proud to support the production of a Sustainable Banking in Africa Report, which will be produced in January 2004. The report, driven by the AICC (African Institute of Corporate Citizenship), will act as a benchmark discussion document to encourage active debate around the principles and practices of sustainable banking in Africa. Through five case studies from South Africa, Botswana, Kenya, Nigeria and Senegal, it is expected that this report will pave the way to uncovering strategies and opportunities unique to the continent. UN Global Compact/UNEP FI Joint Workshop on Investors and Sustainability http://unepfi.net/globalcompact A joint workshop between the UNEP Finance Initiatives and the United Nations Global Compact was held at the UN Foundation on September 17th, 2003 in Washington, DC to discuss ways in which the mainstream financial community could be more effectively engaged in the sustainable investment debate. Workshop participants identified 3 key areas for mainstreaming sustainable investment: development of "sustainable" investment tools, demanding greater disclosure and transparency, and more effective distribution methods. Further meetings will be held to discuss initiatives aimed at providing solutions to these issues. A report will be published soon concerning the workshop. Finance, Environment and Sustainable Development Seminar Report January 10, 2003; Société Générale Headquarters, Paris, France http://www.unepfi.net/socgen The report of the groundbreaking event that heralded France's progress towards the forefront of sustainability and brought together Europe's financial community is now out. Over three hundred bankers, insurers, asset managers, government and civil society representatives from across Europe, North America, Asia and Africa engaged in a lively discussion on Corporate Responsibility and Capital Markets, Qualitative Risk Management, and Climate Change. The Results of the Annual Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes Review http://www.sustainability-indexes.com/htmle/assessment/review.html Dow Jones Indexes, STOXX Limited and SAM Group have recently announced the results of the annual review for the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI). This has become effective with the opening of equity markets on September 22, 2003 the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index will again include over 300 companies from 22 countries that lead their industry in terms of corporate sustainability. The assessment results also provide detailed information about recent sustainability developments in the corporate world. The integration of economic, environmental and social criteria, across all industries, has moved further up the business agenda and is increasingly incorporated into company strategies and core business operations. 15. New Executive Director for AsrIA http://www.asria.org Melissa Brown has been appointed as ASrIA's new Executive Director. Previously she was Managing Director, Deputy Head of Asian Research at Salomon Smith Barney. Commenting on her new role, Melissa said that she believes that Asia needs groups like ASrIA as Asian markets and investors' needs are maturing rapidly, creating huge demand for fresh approaches to long-term investing which will benefit the region. ASrIA's Chair, Tessa Tennant said that one of the most striking facts about ASrIA was the calibre of people it attracted. She felt that this said a great deal about the relevance of SRI in Asia and that SRI offers the only sane future. Tessa and the rest of the ASrIA team looks forward to the prospect of working with Melissa, especially in developing the research and analysis of Asian aspects of SRI. ACTIVITIES 16. How can the ideals of sustainable development be incorporated into the business practices and models of the finance sector? This report is a compilation of over 100 essays from sustainable finance experts from all over the world including sections on Asset Management, Climate Change, Environmental Management, Reporting & Indicators and many other insights into the fascinating world of sustainable finance. Conflict Risk, Markets and the Bottom-Line" UNEP FI is collaborating with the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) in a project to investigate the links between finance and conflict, in order to map the areas of greatest interest to banks and insurers. The project "Investing in Stability - Conflict Risk, Markets and the Bottom-Line" is funded by the German Environment Ministry (BMU). A workshop was held on September 5, 2003, in London, bringing together close to 30 experts from all sectors of finance, governments, NGOs and academia to discuss the relevance of conflict for financial institutions and their role in conflict prevention or mitigation. Findings of the initial research were presented to a wider audience at a conference on "Ecology and Peace in Crisis-Prone Regions - The Role of the Business Sector" on October 3-5, 2003 in Loccum.
