For Panama to position itself as the sustainable financing center for the region, coherent action by all actors in the financial sector will be necessary. This process will capitalize on emerging opportunities and challenges for the financial sector, and will consolidate a model of co-responsibility for environmental management by different sectors of society.

The main actors of the Panamanian financial sector and key actors of the governmental and non-governmental sectors met to establish the “Sustainable Finance Working Group”. This group will have the responsibility of collaborating to address environmental, social and governance issues in the different activities of the financial system.

In this first meeting, which took place on 25 September, 2018 supervisors, risk managers, financial actors, insurers, financial intermediaries and/or investors, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, and the Ministry of Environment were present. All actors were aware that the financial system has an important role to play in helping achieve an inclusive, resilient and sustainable economy that promotes human well-being, social equity and environmental conservation in harmony with the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

In this regard, the parties signed an agreement to establish a working group to develop a National Sustainable Finance Roadmap that addresses environmental, social and governance aspects in the context of risk management activities, intermediation of resources, and investment of the Panamanian financial system. This “Roadmap” will help consolidate the financial system and strengthen the economy of Panama by aligning it with local, national, regional and global objectives in terms of sustainable development such that it is compatible with business objectives and the best industry practices.

This first meeting of sustainable finance was possible thanks to the sponsorship of the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE), the technical support of the Financial Initiative of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP FI), the National Association for the Conservation (ANCON), and the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE) led by the Bolsa de Valores de Panamá (BVP).
