UNEP FI Activities in Portugal

UNEP FI has partnered with Sustenare, a Portuguese sustainability consultancy, and Portuguese banks Banco Espirito Santo (BES) and Caixa Geral de Depositos (CGD) to drive environmental sustainability into the Portuguese banking sector.

The project is officially launching in November 2009, and will take place over a two year period. In consultation with industry stakeholders and the Portuguese banking industry, the aim of the project is to provide both Portuguese banks and Portuguese companies with information on environmental risks.

The goals of the project are:

• To provide concrete information and tools on the environmental risks facing Portuguese banks
• To increase awareness of environemtnal risks amongst Portuguese companies, from SMEs to large companies
• To deliver industry-specific / sectoral questionnaires which can be implemented by all Portuguese banks when analysing credit loans

BES and CGD joined UNEP FI in May 2009. They are committed to promoting sustainability in the Portuguese banking sector.
