Sustainable Finance Training
News
Aim
Our sustainable finance training services are part of our effort to realise the mission of UNEP FI to "identify, promote, and realise the adoption of best environmental and sustainability practice at all levels of financial institution operations”.
The inter-regional sustainable finance training project is a new work stream, created in 2006 to meet the training needs of UNEP FI Signatories.
The primary aim of these services is to raise awareness and to build capacity in sustainable finance amongst UNEP FI Signatories and other financial institutions, as well as stakeholders in governments, NGOs and academia, especially in developing countries and emerging markets.
Activities
Climate Change E-Learning Training Programme
In June 2007, UNEP FI, in collaboration with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), launched an online training course, "Climate Change: Risks and Opportunities for the Finance Sector". The course uses the state-of-the-art interactive e-learning platform offered by UNITAR, and it is free and open to all UNEP FI Signatories. As a follow up to the e-learning course, the programme encourages Regional Task Forces to undertake regional specific workshops.
The course will help you:
- Understand the basics of climate change and its effects on economic systems and its financial sectors.
- Learn what greenhouse-gas markets, carbon finance, cat-bonds and weather derivatives are all about.
- Find out how your institution could optimally minimize the resulting risks and embrace the opportunities.
- Work via the internet from home/your office/elsewhere and under a flexible time curriculum.

Environmental & Social Risk Analysis: NEW E-Learning Programme
No longer just an ideal, responsible social and environmental performance provides companies with a competitive advantage. UNEP FI’s new E-Learning Programme on Environmental and Social Risk Analysis (ESRA) provides guidance on how consideration of social and environmental risks in mainstream financial analysis can open up a wide range of opportunities both for the financial sector and for the promotion of sustainable development.
The ESRA E-Learning Programme is a product of the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI), Capacity Building International(InWent), and the INCAE Business School, with the support of the Ecobanking Project. Initially developed in Spanish in 2006 by the UNEP FI Latin American Regional Task Force with the support of Bank of America, the English-language edition of the course was produced in 2007 thanks to the support of FMO.
