Financing the Future We Want: Where Is The Leadership?

Grand Ballroom
16:00 - 18:00

Following the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, financial institutions have been further hit by a series of scandals (e.g.: Libor and other inter-bank rate manipulation, sanction-breaking and insider trading to name a few) and financial regulators are criticized for not doing enough.  With public disillusionment high, growing amounts of resources are being pumped into rebuilding the credibility of financial markets by both financial regulators and financial institutions. At this juncture, several questions emerge:  is attention focused on the “right” issues?  What kind of leadership is needed to address long term and structural issues related to finance?  And where will this leadership come from?

The plenary discussion will build on the conference survey taken from participants over the course of the day via the conference app – as below:

1.     Which actors are key to mainstream sustainability in the financial system?

2.     How can governments show leadership in bringing sustainability into financial markets?

 3.     How can financial institutions show leadership in bringing sustainability into financial markets?

The session will also provide an opportunity to discuss a range of topics relevant to financing sustainable development and catalyzing a quantum shift in investment towards a greener and more inclusive economy.  These topics include but are not limited to public policies and mechanisms to leverage private finance, fiscal reform, subsidies, and financial instruments, products and services that address environmental protection, social equity and progress, and inclusive growth.
