Sector overview and scope
Scope and relevance to FIs. This sector profile is relevant to financial institutions in relation to the financing of retail and consumer services. Consumer companies provide finished goods or services to consumers, and retail is the channel through which these are sold. There are many different retail sales and store types worldwide, including online retail, grocery, convenience, discounts, independents, department stores, electrical and specialty.
Sub-sectors and activities. Major retail and consumer services sub-sectors covered in this profile are: Consumer retail and e-commerce; Transport and logistics; Tourism and leisure; Employment agencies.
Key sectoral trends relevant to human rights:
- Technology and digitalisation. The sector’s increasing use of technology (e.g. surveillance, increasing in-store automation, ‘frictionless shopping’, AI, shift to e-commerce) has the potential to support employment creation, but has also displaced other jobs and brought to light challenges to ensuring decent work in the sector. The increasing digitalisation of the sector also makes it more vulnerable to cyberattacks, which can compromise the integrity, availability and confidentiality of consumer data.
- Sustainability. Consumers are increasingly demanding transparency and sustainability from brands and retailers throughout their supply chains. Sustainability is becoming more mainstream and affordable as the cost of sustainable materials and technologies is dropping. New regulatory developments also encourage this focus on social and environmental responsibility.
- Downstream risks. There is increasing focus on companies’ responsibilities regarding their downstream product or services, and its potential impact on the end-user consumer. Downstream risks could include the health and safety of end-use consumers. For example, the sale and use of connected devices may bring a number of specific issues linked to consumer protection, data privacy and cybersecurity for example.
