Asset Owner Alliance – Methodological Criteria Call for Comment

Throughout April and May 2020, the Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance (NZAOA) issued a Call for Comment on carbon neutrality / “implied temperature rise” methodology convergence or the “Methodological Criteria” document.

The Alliance is an international group of institutional investors with a commitment to transitioning investment portfolios to net-zero emissions by 2050 consistent with a maximum temperature rise of 1.5°C.

In order for the Alliance to monitor progress and report against this 1.5°C target , there is a need to develop robust measurement methodologies. While various solutions and metrics already exist, more convergence is urgently needed. The NZAOA is not designed to develop such solutions. Instead, the Alliance has described expectations in the ‘Methodological Criteria” document. In order to broaden our understanding as well as respondents, and further advance the dialogue on methodological convergence we invite your organization to comment and provide its views.

Throughout June, July and August, the Alliance reviewed over 500 pages of responses. In September the Alliance held an open webinar for those who responded to discuss details of submissions.

The Alliance is now pleased to share the updated live V2 of the Methodological Principles. V1 is available here. The Alliance aims to continue to update as further development of the analytics occur: Link here

Next, the Alliance will i)  issue a summary of the reactions and ii) prepare a deep dive comparison of the Temperature Scores available from a diverse set of providers.
