The UN-convened Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance (NZAOA) is a member-led initiative of institutional investors committed to transitioning their investment portfolios to net zero GHG emissions by 2050 – consistent with a maximum temperature rise of 1.5°C.
The Alliance members are the finance industry’s first to set intermediate targets, which include CO2 reduction ranges for 2025 (22 – 32%) and for 2030 (40% – 60%).
Key information
Members
Launched at the UN Secretary-General’s Climate Ambition Summit in September 2019 with 12 members, the Alliance now counts 87 members across 18 countries with US$9.5 trillion in assets under management.
Robust methodologies
The Alliance has built and expanded science-based methodologies for setting climate targets. The fourth edition of its Target-Setting Protocol, released in 2024, covers the entirety of members’ private assets and almost the entirety of members’ portfolios.
Credible targets
Using the Alliance’s Target-Setting Protocol, 79 members (with a combined AuM of USD 9.4 trillion) have now set Paris-aligned 2025 decarbonization targets.
Portfolio emission reduction
The Alliance’s latest data shows that that all member cohorts (based on the base year for reporting) have recorded reductions in absolute financed emissions of at least 6 per cent annually, in line with the IPCC’s 1.5ºC pathways.
Investing in climate solutions
Starting with climate solution investments of US$87 billion in 2020, Alliance members more than quadrupled their combined investments to US$555 billion by end of 2023.
