Charles Anderson
Director, UNEP Finance Initiative

Since March 2014, when Charles Anderson took on the role of Director at UNEP FI, his initial work has seen him engaged in wide a range of UN initiatives - the Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE) in Dubai, Forest Asia Summit in Indonesia, the first United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) in Nairobi in June and the UN Secretary-General's Climate Summit in September. Signatory activities have included the Principles for Sustainable Insurance (PSI) workshops in London, consultation meetings with insurance and banking regulators relevant to the UNEP Inquiry and sustainable finance systems as well as member outreach across the regions.

Charles has more than 30 years of experience in the financial sector and has played key leadership roles in integrating environmental, social and governance concerns into the private sector. He believes that the finance sector can lead by example in the transition to an inclusive, resilient and sustainable economy.

From 2009-2013, Charles was CEO of Sovereign, New Zealand's largest life and health insurance business. During his time there, he aligned the environmental and sustainability policy with its core business strategy and was active in the global process that produced the landmark Principles for Sustainable Insurance (PSI) launched at Rio+20 by UNEP FI. He also launched the Sovereign Wellbeing Index, a survey to find out what makes New Zealanders happy, and what needs to change to improve their wellbeing.

Previously he worked at Aviva as Managing Director for Asia Pacific and was an Associate of UK based Leader’s Quest, a not-for-profit promoting social change. He has also served as a Board member of the New Zealand Council for Sustainable Business Development and as Deputy Chair of the Financial Services Council in New Zealand.

He holds an MBA from the University of London in Business & Administration/Management, and a bachelor’s from the University of Birmingham in Mathematics & Statistics/Applied Mathematics.
