An international event convened by UN Environment’s Principles for Sustainable Insurance Initiative and the Allianz Group

Read a summary of the event and announcements that took place here.

Our planet’s biosphere is under immense pressure from unsustainable development, and the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report highlights the rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes needed to limit global warming to 1.5°C. At the same time, the economic and social costs of natural disasters are escalating, and the insurance protection gap is widening.

This two-day event seeks to drive ambitious sustainability action by the insurance industry in line with the aims of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)Paris Agreement on Climate Change and Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, and the UN Secretary-General’s Climate Summit in September 2019. It will build on the PSI’s work as it deepens sustainable insurance thinking and practice globally across key environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues and the insurance industry’s roles as risk managers, insurers and investors.

The event will feature the launch of the first global guide to manage ESG risks in non-life insurance underwriting, and shape the sustainability agenda for the life and health insurance industry. Key themes include the future of energy, natural catastrophe trends, the insurance protection gap, financing a sustainable ocean economy, the Financial Stability Board’s climate risk disclosure recommendations (TCFD), ageing populations, smart health and prevention, climate change and mortality, and SDG investing.

The event is a practical follow-up to the first PSI-Allianz event in 2016, Insuring for sustainable development: Making it happen, which cultivated agenda-setting ideas such as the PSI initiative to develop global ESG guidance for insurance underwriting. The 2019 event also seeks to deepen industry action and engagement across PSI collaborative initiatives spanning climate action, the TCFD recommendations, resilient cities, financial inclusion, healthy oceans, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, tobacco-free finance, and the Vulnerable Twenty Group of Ministers of Finance (V20).
