On 12 May 2016, the Union of Arab Banks became the second institution globally and first regionally to join UNEP FI under the Supporting Institution Status.

Following the formalization of the partnership agreement under the Supporting Institutions, UNEP FI partnered with the UAB for the 2016 International Arab Banking Summit that took place in Rome on 29-30 May, 2016. The main theme of the Summit revolved around the effect of climate change on banking and finance.

As a Supporting Institution and under this partnership, the UAB as the largest banking consortium in the Arab region, took the commitment to act as a platform to raise awareness on sustainable finance in the Arab region in cooperation with UNEP FI.  This includes providing support to the banking sector in the region through specialized capacity building programmes focused on Environmental and Social Risk linked to their operations and services.
