In 2005, UNEP FI produced the landmark Freshfields report, which set out the legal duty for incorporating ESG issues into investor portfolios.
In 2006 the UN-supported Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) was created as a spin-off from UNEP FI and the UN Global Compact. Both UN partners sit on the Board of the PRI Association.
In 2014 UNEP FI and PRI signed a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that identifies areas of collaboration for joint activities and mutual support.
Since January 2016, UNEP FI investment members that are PRI Signatories can participate in the joint annual membership fee programme and enjoy a 10% discount in each membership fee.
While UNEP FI and PRI are committed to collaborate closely on areas of mutual interest, they remain separate organizations with a distinct governance, structure and overarching mandate. UNEP FI is a UN partnership with the private finance sector. PRI is a UK based Association, also referred to as a UN-supported organization.
