UNEP FI is inviting feedback on the Sector Impact Matrix as part of its ongoing development. The consultation seeks input from a broad range of organizations and practitioners on the content, usability and future development of the Matrix, building on experience and feedback from its users. The consultation is open to all audiences, including financial institutions, corporates, investors, standard-setters, policymakers, regulators, data providers, civil society and other interested stakeholders.

Access the consultation questionnaire until 31 December

What is being reviewed?

The consultation covers both the content of the Matrix, how the resource is used in practice, and what role it should play in the future. Areas under review include:

  • Matrix user profiles and use-cases
  • The completeness and accuracy of sector-impact associations and other data points
  • The coverage of positive impacts
  • The new information provided on impact opportunities and associated financial risks
  • The usability and functionality of the Matrix, including its use alongside AI
  • Potential gaps in the topics, sectors, affected parties and impact drivers covered
  • The interoperability of the Matrix with other impact management resources
  • Potential approaches to the future governance and ongoing development of the resource

Respondents are welcome to answer all questions or only those relevant to their organization or areas of expertise. Where possible, we encourage respondents to provide examples and practical experience to help inform the review.

Who should participate in the consultation?

UNEP FI is inviting organizations and practitioners from across the impact management and sustainability community to complete the consultation questionnaire.

The consultation provides an opportunity for financial institutions, corporates, investors, standard-setters, policymakers, regulators, data providers, civil society and other interested stakeholders to help shape a widely used sector-impact resource. We particularly welcome responses from organizations that use the Matrix, related sector-impact resources, or sector-level sustainability information in their work.

This vital feedback ensure that the Matrix remains relevant, practical and useful across different organizations, sectors and use cases such as materiality assessments, due diligence, standards development and more.

The consultation will remain open until the end of 2026.

Responses to the questionnaire will be reviewed by the UNEP FI and partner organizations from the Impact Management Platform and considered alongside other consultation inputs. The feedback will inform the further development of the Sector Impact Matrix and related resources.

About the Matrix

Understanding the associations between economic sectors and their sustainability impacts is an important foundation for effective impact management and sustainability analysis. Organizations need to understand where positive and negative impacts are likely to occur across sectors when undertaking activities such as materiality assessments, due diligence, portfolio analysis, target setting, client engagement and sustainability reporting.

The UNEP FI Sector Impact Matrix is designed to provide a common reference point for understanding these sector-impact associations. The Matrix identifies likely positive and negative impacts across economic sectors and activities, including information on affected parties, value chain and other relevant dimensions.

The consultation plans to build on feedback from users, developments in impact management, and lessons learned through the application of the Matrix across different audiences and use cases.
