2025 is a pivotal year for ocean finance. With global momentum building around the UN Ocean Conference (UNOC, 9–13 June in Nice, France) and the Blue Economy and Finance Forum (BEFF, 7-8 June in Monaco), attention is turning to how public and private finance can help close the funding gap for SDG 14 – Life Below Water, the least funded of all Sustainable Development Goals. Through its Sustainable Blue Economy Finance Initiative (SBE FI), UNEP FI is supporting this shift by helping financial institutions align capital flows with ocean health. In 2025, SBE FI is contributing to a series of key moments, including the launch of the Ocean Investment Protocol (28 May, online), engagement in the Global Plastic Pollution Treaty and High Seas Treaty negotiations, and co-hosting dialogues at and around events such as the Our Ocean Conference (28-30 April in Busan, South Korea), the One Ocean Science Congress (3–6 June in Nice, France) and the Blue Economy & Finance Forum (7-8 June in Monaco).
