The UN Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is based in Geneva, Switzerland, a unit within the UN Environment Programme’s Industry and Economy Division.
Global Steering Committee
The Governance of UNEP FI is reflective of the Initiative’s role as a partnership between UNEP and the global network of banks, insurers and investors who are implementing UNEP FI’s two voluntary frameworks, the Principles for Responsible Banking and the Principles for Sustainable Insurance.
The UNEP FI Global Steering Committee, co-chaired by representatives from the banking and insurance membership, provides executive direction on strategic, work programme and budgetary issues related to UNEP FI. The Global Steering Committee reports to UNEP FI’s Annual General Meeting.
The UNEP FI Annual General Meeting (AGM) is a yearly informative platform where UNEP FI’s banking and insurance members can learn about the global work programme and to help determine the direction of the Initiative. Members are encouraged to ensure a representative from their organization is present for the meeting and to nominate a representative from their organization to vote on any items resulting from the meeting.

Advisory
The UNEP FI Leadership Council convenes CEOs and Chairpersons from organisations represented on the three elected committees meeting annually in an advisory capacity to provide vision and strategic direction to UNEP FI in orienting its role and that of the UN, in shaping, mainstreaming and deepening sustainability integration across the industry.
UNEP FI’s Social Action Plan sets out how UNEP FI’s work aligns with the three UN guiding principles that underpin the implementation of the 2030 Agenda: gender equality, inclusion, and human rights. The plan complements the 2026 to 2029 UNEP FI Strategy – a document that identifies priorities and strategic drivers for the period – and is based on input from over 250 UNEP FI members and key stakeholders including UNEP FI’s governance bodies. It is available to UNEP FI members via the members’ area.
