About the event

The 4th PSI Africa Market Event will translate the SDGs in the context of the African insurance industry. The event will discuss key SDG-relevant sustainability challenges and opportunities for Africa, including the insurance protection gap, the resilience and sustainability of cities, and food & agriculture systems. Considering the current COVID-19 circumstances, the latest pandemic situation and the subsequent changing African sustainability landscape will also be considered throughout the day.

The PSI Africa Market Event is an annual event. Previous PSI market events were hosted by Santam Insurance in Johannesburg (2018), Continental Re in Lagos (2019) and Zimnat in Victoria Falls (2020).

PSI Africa Market Events convene PSI members and other leading insurance organisations (Africa-domiciled organisations and global organisations with African operations), insurance regulators, city/local and national government officials, key international initiatives, business and industry, civil society organisations, and academia.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—a shared vision to end poverty, rescue the planet and build a prosperous and peaceful world—are gaining global momentum. Leave no one behind is the central, transformative promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While progress is being made in many places, action to meet the SDGs is not yet advancing at the speed or scale required.

In this vein, the UN’s Decade of Action offers an unprecedented opportunity for the global insurance industry to scale up action and impact through a set of “Insurance Sustainable Development Goals” that would harness insurance products and solutions to help achieve the SDGs.

The UNEP FI Principles for Sustainable Insurance (PSI) initiative is currently developing a set of “Insurance Sustainable Development Goals” (iSDGs). The iSDGs are ambitious, quantitative, insurance product/solution-specific goals at the global insurance industry level.

For each iSDG, a roadmap at the global insurance industry level (“industry roadmap”) and targets at the insurance company level (“company targets”) will be developed, with the aim to increase the penetration of existing SDG-supporting insurance products and solutions, and develop new SDG-supporting products and solutions that are needed.

The initiative also aims to develop methods and toolkits for the insurance industry and key stakeholders on how to measure progress in achieving the SDGs in the context of the impact of insurance products and solutions.
