Shaping the sustainable insurance agenda in Latin America

An event convened by UN Environment’s Principles for Sustainable Insurance Initiative (PSI) and the Brazilian Insurance Confederation (CNseg)

and supported by the Brazilian Superintendence for Private Insurance (SUSEP)

15 May 2018

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

About the event

The Principles for Sustainable Insurance (PSI) were launched during the 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro—two decades after the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio—also known as the 1992 Rio Earth Summit.

This May, we’re going back to Rio for another pioneering event—the first PSI regional market event for Latin America.

Sustainable insurance leadership is evident in Brazil. It is the only insurance market that has set market-wide environmental, social and governance goals based on the four Principles for Sustainable Insurance. It is also the country with the most number of PSI members and one of the few insurance markets in the world where leading insurance companies, the national insurance federation (CNseg), and the national insurance regulator (SUSEP) have all signed the PSI.

This PSI market event will convene leading insurance organisations doing business in Latin America, insurance regulators and supervisors, local and national government officials, key international initiatives, business and industry, civil society organisations, and academia.

The aim is to shape the sustainable insurance agenda in Latin America across the insurance industry’s triple role in sustainable development as risk managers, insurers, and investors.

Key topics that will be discussed include:

  • How the PSI is shaping the global sustainable insurance agenda
  • Integrating environmental, social and governance risks into non-life insurance underwriting
  • Key sustainability challenges and opportunities in the context of life and health insurance business
  • The significance of sustainability issues to insurance regulation and supervision
  • Implementing the recommendations of the Financial Stability Board’s (FSB) Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) for the insurance industry
  • Sustainable investment strategies, innovations and trends in the insurance industry

Moreover, this PSI market event will be held back-to-back with other important events in Rio that same week:

  • The 4th meeting of UN Environment’s Sustainable Insurance Forum for Supervisors (SIF), which will be hosted by the Brazilian Superintendence for Private Insurance (SUSEP) on 16 May
  • The Supervisory Dialogue organised by the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS), SUSEP and the Access to Insurance Initiative (A2ii) on 17 May

PSI market events have been hosted by Aviva and Lloyd’s in London (2014), Swiss Re in Rüschlikon (2015), the Philippine Insurers & Reinsurers Association in Manila (2016), Allianz in Munich (2016), Munich Re in Princeton (2017) and Santam in Johannesburg (2018).
