Shaping the sustainable insurance agenda in Africa

An event convened by UN Environment’s Principles for Sustainable Insurance Initiative (PSI) and Santam

16-17 April 2018

Johannesburg, South Africa

About the event

In March 2011, the global consultation process to develop the Principles for Sustainable Insurance (PSI) —which spanned seven regions around the world—kicked off in Johannesburg, South Africa. That pioneering 2011 event in Johannesburg was convened by UN Environment and co-hosted by Santam and the South African Insurance Association.

This April, we’re going back to Johannesburg for another pioneering event—the first PSI Regional Market Event for Africa.

In recent years, the PSI’s membership and engagement in Africa has steadily expanded from organisations based in South Africa, to other organisations and markets across the continent. These include Botswana, also in the South, Kenya and Tanzania in the East, Nigeria and Senegal in the West, and Morocco in the North.

This PSI African Market Event will convene PSI members and other leading insurance organisations (Africa-domiciled organisations and global organisations with African operations), insurance regulators, city/local and national government officials, key international initiatives, business and industry, civil society organisations, and academia.

The aim is to shape the sustainable insurance agenda in Africa across the insurance industry’s triple role in sustainable development as risk managers, insurers, and investors. Key sustainability challenges and opportunities that will be covered include the insurance protection gap, social and financial inclusion, and the resilience and sustainability of cities, infrastructure, and food and agriculture systems.

Previous PSI market events were hosted by Aviva and Lloyd’s in London (2014), Swiss Re in Rüschlikon (2015), the Philippine Insurers & Reinsurers Association in Manila (2016), Allianz in Munich (2016) and Munich Re in Princeton (2017).
